I wanted to share my perspective based on many years of experience working with cat hoarding cases. TDLR: a little kindness goes a long way! What do you think?

  • I have met two types of hoarders- the most common is animal lovers who get over extended because of their desire to help animals and they live in areas where their are SO MANY strays that they keep trying to help all the animals until they are overwhelmed. The other type are breeders who are so greedy they endless overextend. By far breeders are in the minority. Maybe 20- 25%.

  • I love this, thank you so much for discussing this issue. I have seen this happen as well, and not only with cats, but with other things (nonliving). I appreciate your compassion and kindness. There is not enough of this in the world today, but it is what we need the most. Hoarding is typically tied into a mental health issue, so compassion does go a long way :)

  • Hello all, wow someone said something good about us cat borders. I have over 60 cats at home they all come from the street and the numbers are increasing by the it time goes. Every one of my cats is a part of my soul I love them all. I do try to find a better home for them buy this is just a dream and every cat hoarder knows this. Most take us as oh free cats we take as much as we want and they are not serious about it. Walking up in the morning ppl tend to have their coffee well we have other procedures to go through starting from the litter box. And trust me they coast a fortune. Most of cat hoarders are ppl who are not ok with the situation of the cat in the streets so they offer them a home, food, medication if needed and so much love. And yes it gets out of control they fight as any siblings and yes some get hurt again just as any siblings. If I would find help I would never say no. But help never arrives so I will keep welcoming street cats and those ones who were dropped in front of my house till last breath and I don’t care what ppl say.

  • Hannah would you please answer the question about large amount of cats. Some people have the capacity to take care of a larger number of cats example: a bigger place a bigger home, a dedication, devotion , passionate about taking care of cats.....or dogs or other animals,. More Love to give, because they have big hearts toward animals. They also have devoted their Time, because they want to. So all these things should come into play. Please share your thoughts about this. Thanks much.

  • Where I live, it’s very much “dog country”. Fresno, California is home of the “Bulldogs”, and a person can quickly go broke trying to TNR in their own neighborhood, let alone trying to help the entire city. What we need in Fresno is someone bi-lingual that can help EDUCATE about cats, the possibly the Feral Cat Coalition coming to Fresno like 2 times or more a month, until we who want to help, can get a handle on things. Cat House on the Kings is overwhelmed as it is, and all though offering low cost spay/neuter, is a ways away from Fresno. Some people don’t have transportation enough to be able to go to and from CHOTK. And, we also need somewhere to house the handleable spays and neuters, to try and find homes for the ones that are semi-tame, or can easily be tamed. Oh how I wish I could win the Lottery!!!

Can anyone let me know if there is anything I can do to save the kitties? She has family and I am not sure how it happens, maybe we can see if we can fix the cats for her so she can the cats she wants to keep and no more babies? I just want a happy ending for everyone in this.

  • It's so incredibly frustrating when people refuse to take care of their cats. Those of us who care, and have a hard time saying NO to an animal in trouble can get over-run really easily. Our old house used to be a dumping ground for people who didn't want their cats anymore and it was simply overwhelming. I was quickly heading into a hoarding situation and had to catch the dumpers red handed to make them stop using us as the kitty drop off. Sometimes the police were called as abandonment isn't legal in our area. And sometimes all it took was a gentle reminder that there are shelters out there that can take unwanted animals. I had to learn to say no, and now our numbers are manageable. We're only focusing on hard to place, special needs animals at the moment and without extra cats being dumped on our property, we CAN give the ones we have the resources they need to thrive. Hoarders aren't evil. They just need help.

  • I live in a rural area and sadly many transients rent for a while then they move on leaving their cats to fends for themselves. Over the years I have had quite a few cats end up on my doorstep. Especially in the late fall and winter. I feed them and take them in because the weather is very harsh where I live. I take them to the Vet to check them out and to administer their shots. My problem is that trying to get them 'fixed" is a giant problem our vets are overwhelmed and it sometimes takes months for an appointment for our guests I have to keep things quite separate for sometimes almost two months besides keeping an eye on our female guests when they venture outside. To all the people who only want a pet for the summer please rethink that idea.

My Mom collected cats and my Aunt collected cats so I was raised with it and know about it. The reek of cat pee, piles of cat poo and vomit, cat hair everywhere and in everything, cats sneezing and coughing and getting sick, and female cats yowling during estrus and the males... well, you know, wanting to get busy. Oh and everything torn up because everything is a scratching post.

Any advice ?

  • I have a lot of respect for the woman who kept my Mr. Slinky alive. She had 100+ cats (ALL ALIVE) in Baltimore that BARCs rescued. He's a delight (I was a foster fail as Mr. Slinky bonded super, super strongly to my extant cat EZ Cheez.) Anyhow, she managed to keep all these cats alive, and when she called the shelter, desperate for help, she thought she had 30 or so...she had something like 130+ all told in there. Slinky was pretty healthy all things considered.

  • Hi there..! Uh I rescued a cat from a loose fire escape yesterday, brought him home, and today took him to the vet, he apparently had a fight with another animal, has scratches on his chest, neck, ear, nose and paw. His frotn left or right leg is hard to walk on, and he has a slight limp. The doctor estimated his age between 2-7 years old. He had a slight fever, and will need a cone. I want to give him the best love and life ever! We'll split him up from my two kittens (and dog) for a bit, I just don't now how long. Is there anything else I need to do? • I weeped and weeped. Yes, “hoarders” are just that, caring and good intentioned but help is hard to find. My husband and I lived near someone who had many many cats. Were not getting neutered and so you can imagine the situation. My husband got his certificate for catch and release. We neutered the outside cats & took in kittens that are now 6 years old. Still with us thriving and live on a lake house. We need to help those who have little means. Even for education and show compassion. Because compassion is key. Love your neighbor says the scriptures. I love cats because they are not looked on well. People mistreat them and neglect them. But we who know more must teach those who don’t know about these beautiful creatures. They have personalities that want to shine. And they love people oh how they love people!

  • I still VERY much dislike animal hoarding in general (cats and dogs are the most common). I have donated to charity things where cats were found in the home of a cat hoarder and many of the cats needed medical treatment very badly. It is still abuse to neglect pets, but I do agree it could be misinformation or lack of information in general.

  • Honestly I find it would be easy for me to become a cat hoarder if I weren't married. Anytime I see a cat whether on the streets or in a shelter I get an overwhelming urge to take it home. Ive cried wondering if I dont take it in, would it have a good life? I have trust issues from childhood trauma. In my mind, I know the cat is safe if I take it in. I cant be sure of that if I leave it for someone else to adopt. We had a lot of cats growing up that we took in and feed on our property so its another reason its an automatic response to take homeless cats in. My husband reminds me that we can't save all of the cats & of course once you have too many cats it becomes unhealthy for everyone (even the cats). But if I lost my husband & sank into a depression I could see how easy it would be to collect cats. Thats why I never think bad of cat hoarders. They are usually well-meaning.

I wanted to take care of all of them since where I was at, people werent fond of cats. It was overwhelming. I should've stopped while I was ahead but at least all 20 of them found new homes eventually and the good feelings I feel about them leaving trumps the good feelings I got being surrounded by them. Years later, I finally got 2 new cats and they're more than enough for me :3

  • Thanks for your compassionate approach on this topic. My own mother is a cat hoarder. We keep things under control and we have to be very vigilant because of this behavior. Two years ago she had about 12 rescued cats, who were living in and out. I know it comes from loneliness, emptiness and unfulfilled affective needs. Is something deep inside her psyche, even though she had everything in life. She has the need to take care of something that gives her back unconditional love. At least we can provide with the economical support to keep things under control. She's 84 years old, I love her and all I can do is respect her love for cats and be supportive as far as I can. We vaccine, spay and neuter the cats at the Humane Society, because is cheap and they try their best to educate people on the problem of dogs and cats overpopulation.

She was 96 when she passed, and had no ability to take care of them for the last ten years of her life, so my grandfather dropped off food, scooped litter boxes, and refilled water, but I’m sure that some of them had medical problems that were never addressed.
