In this video, I discuss ten things you need to know about how to foster a feral mama and her kittens, including how to set up a proper space for them, how to safely handle the kittens, how to transfer the mama in and out of the enclosure, when to spay the mama, and more!
Watch my video about Mama Tumtum reuniting with her babies HERE:
Learn about why cats like Mama Tumtum are feral HERE:

  • My friend has a feral cat that can't be released because of old age (13 years and still going strong!) and they just have a mutual agreement that they both leave each other alone except for necessary care.

  • You forgot one major thing that is extremely important and dangerous not to do. If you have a slightly feral momma that's okay with pets and you touching her kittens *_snuggle the hell out of them all_* (Not seriously lol, if said momma cat doesn't wanna snuggle than don't, but if you can it might help them feel safer!)

    • @A Autumn I foster kittens, and ill or injured cats, I know for a fact that love can make them feel better lol. I don't drink coffee.

    • You should stay away from feral cats. Your parents should also keep you away from coffee.

  • I personally like putting my kittens (I've yet to foster a mom myself but I have experience) box a little towards a wall (I have a male cat and a younger male cat) so they don't feel threatened.

  • The cat I adopted years back was a stray and it was the friendliest cat ever so calm and sweet and loved sitting in my lap. I was actually shocked the first time it jumped in my lap it was still a stray, we were sitting on my porch and it started crouching and just leaped right onto my lap, I didn't know what was going on at first but I was like wow it was such an instant connection stray cats are really the best!

    • Tumtum, the cat in this video, is a feral cat not a stray cat. They are NOT the same thing. A feral cat is a cat unsocialized to human contact. They cannot feel safe or comfortable in a human home. The best thing we can do for them is get them TNRed or into a barn cat program. A stray cat is a socialized cat that has been abandoned, lost, or otherwise displaced. You are correct you had a stray cat. Please don't make the mistake of thinking Tumtum is the same thing though.

  • Hannah, I have not touched Mama's 2 kittens with my bare hands nor have I ever picked them up for fear that Mama will reject her babies because they will smell like "humanoid" me. I rescued Mama and her kittens about 2 weeks ago. Will the kittens be friendly and socialize if I pick them up with gloves? Or, do I not need to worry about picking them up with my bare hands?

phaiga miriam Gentilcorephaiga miriam Gentilcore6 օր առաջ
    • Handle them. Kiss them. Love them. Shower them in affection. Their mother WILL NOT reject them because of your scent. That whole notion of not handling kittens for that reason is nothing but misinformation. Harmful misinformation. You need to socialize the kittens. You need to weigh them regularly to make sure they are gaining weight. Make sure you get their mother spayed soon too, she will go into heat again quickly once the kittens are weaning. Spay/neuter is two months or two pounds for kittens.

  • I love your videos and you’ve helped me learn so much over the passed year. As a foster mom to 3 litters just in 2020. We have managed to not only TN&R all the ferals in our hood. We also successfully rehabilitated and adopted out 3 litters of kittens. There were heartbreaks along the way, especially those caught in an early winter storm last year, found after the had just been weened from mama who was but a baby herself. Her 2 surviving litter mates Moose & Missy were rescued just in time and actually found there way inside our house after disappearing for 2 days. We though they had parishes in the snow after not seeing them for so long and a failed attempt to trap them. We found them in our back bedroom. The dynamic duo made it pasted all five of our domestics cats. It took weeks of patience and gained their trust, then starting all over after temporally loosing their trust after surgery day. They quickly fell back into their routine and found a beautiful young couple willing to take them both. We absolutely wanted to keep them together after loosing their mama (still living but feral) and litter mates. They are now thriving and so very loving in their forever home. We get updates from the parents and pictures of them loving life as indoor kitties. My owe youngest family member was another kitten who found us at 5 weeks old. She is my best friend and we have a bond that can never be broken. We’ve also had two litter of bottle babies abandoned by mama who were success stories also. By far a feral kittens already weaned and taught to fear humans were the biggest challenge but not impossible to save and domesticate. Your videos on that helped me tremendously and just wanted to thank you for sharing and educating us all on how to control a feral community. It can be done with a little patience and a lot of love. To all my fosters babies, I love you all and you will always have a place in my heart.. Keep up the good work KITTEN LADY 🐾💕

    • There's a difference between stray and feral. Feral cats are unsocialized cats. A "stray" is a socialized cat that has been abandoned, lost, or otherwise displaced. You should contact a local TNR group either way to help the cats. Unless you see eartips done already? Tumtum, the cat in this video, was eartipped to show she was spayed.

  • Thank you for your awesome video on feral moms with kittens. We took in a feral cat and 4 kittens just after moving into our home 17 years ago. She rejected the kittens and we bottle raised them. So hard to let them go after, but they all went to great, forever homes. Momma stuck around after and kept inching closer. She's now my little princess cat that sleeps in an electric bed for extra warmth. I'm glad she chose to become an indoor cat and let us care for her many years ago. She lost her sight 2 years ago and would not be able to fend for herself as a feral. And our family has enjoyed our time with her since she moved into the house 16 years ago. We respect the feral, but are thankful for the ones who choose other lives also.

  • I had taken a foster mama who was feral, but had accepted another litter at the shelter as well as her own. Once I had gotten her home I noticed she wasn't wanting them to nurse, and in a short few hours was full on attacking them :(. Turns out she had developed mastitis and it was very painful for them to nurse, we treated her but she never accepted the babies back and continued to be aggressive. I ended up bottle feeding 9, 2-3 week old kittens and mom got adopted by a farmer :)

  • Thank you so much for this. Today is my first day fostering a feral mom and kittens. I thought I was suppose to try to make friends with the mom. I also didn't know I should be making sure they are gaining weight and if not, I need to supplement them. The lady who runs the program said they are nursing fine and I shouldn't need too, but I've only seen/heard one nursing earlier. So now I'm worried. It's almost midnight and I'm wondering if I should go get some KMR. I don't even know what they weighed yesterday, I didn't know I should be weighing them. I'm going to see if Walmart is still open. Not sure tho, with Covid. Wish me luck.

The "runt" is a big baby; when ever I take her away from momma to check her, she cries like there's no tomorrow. Momma is getting more comfortable with me being around. I talk to them all the time and read them stories and poetry. It's so much fun to see how much they change and how curious the babies are getting. I love the little sleeping positions they get in. I sure am enjoying this experience.

  • I took in adult "friendly" cat and it took me like between year and 2 to be able to touch her, and even now after few years of having her she sometimes run away from me. I don't know her past, but I fully agree with leaving adult feral cats where they are from, after spaying/neutering of course. Feral cats are so much better staying scared of humans, running away, keeps them more safe. It's better to socialize kittens to find them homes.

  • Despite what she says, any adult cat can be tamed. It doesn't take 3 years. But it's true, just because you can doesn't mean you should. But it depends hugely on where you are. You absolutely should not release cats where I am, because of the wildlife. It's socialise or put down.

  • Feral doesn't mean mean, or angry, just scared and doesn't feel safe around humans. Also small tip if you find kittens say in your backyard, leave them for a couple of hours and check on them, try not to touch them either. And if you dont see the momma try to feed them kitten formula if they are too young for food, if they are old enough to eat (try looking to see if they have their teeth) Soften some cat food in water, you can warm it up in the microwave also. (Tell me if I said anything wrong here also)

  • Here is the perfect way to describe how cats care for their babies. As you said, they don't prioritize each individual baby the way humans do, they look at them as a group and make sure as many survive as possible, with the expectation that not all will survive (just a consequence of having so many more so much more frequently than humans). "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."

So she rejected one at 9bdays old and he was going to pass away the vet said, so had to do the stool relief thing. Even watched bum bum under a tap when so kuch came out all mustard orangey coloured after a bout if Constipation. His sister also had not been fed and was hoarse, so I hand reared her at 12 days old too. Same thing and often had to massage near abdomen and back legs whilst she tried to get it out in the cat litter. She cried for help. 7 weeks old all 3 kittens were rehomed but I still have Blu, the rejected one at 9 days. No more Constipation and lots of natural cat foid and human veg that he likes and water, make sure they drink water. He had to unlearn bottled milk which he craved, esp oat milk. Great video brings back memories.

I never saw the correlation between feral cat colonies existing just because they exist and feral cat colonies as intentional things that humans need to actively maintain by not decimating their numbers. The amount of respect you have for a cat's free will is impressive and awe-inspiring.

Here they freeze to death and thats why we don't have colonies and many homeless cats. Its also illegal to own a cat thats not sprayed or kastrated unless you are a breeder.

And also, they aren't necessarily from the "wild," they're from neighborhoods where ppl feed them, they live in communities, under decks, Mobil homes, barns ECT. They don't have the need to be domesticated, however if they're sick it's great when organizations are capable of providing care to these cats so they don't spread illness & disease to other indoor/ outdoor cats. Also, they deserve just as much love - just from a distance. Trying to force a ferrel cat to be an indoor cat brings them undo stress and anxiety. Thanks cat lady ☺

Ask how many animals were put down in the last year due to grave illness or lack of resources. Thousands of pets die every single day abandoned on the streets and in over crowded shelters. They die alone, hungry, afraid. There are too many of them and not enough homes for them all. Spay, neuter, adopt. TNR cat colonies. Never support breeders. Stop of cycle of misery for as many pets as possible.

For our holiday home in France in the house next door no one lives there and all the village feral cats go there so every summer when we go there’s always at least one litter of kittens in the garden but normally there around 5 week-8weeks so they hiss and run from us and when we are there we do contribute and feed them but what do you suggest we do because we did calll a reduce but they were full and she basically told us that if we did catch them because we only go for 2 weeks they would just be put to sleep and I don’t want that to happen. Any advice ?

    • Hi there, I live in France too and have been dealing with cat colonies for a while. I am very surprised at how this institute reacted. What you can do is try to contact an association in your "région" (you can find them on Google usually, smaller associations outside of "SPA" are usually more efficient and more willing to help with those situations so I'd recommend avoiding the big ones) and explain over the phone (it's important to get some sort of vocal interaction to explain these delicate situations usually) that you'd like a "ticket" or a slip (what we call a "bon") for spaying and neutering a feral cat that lives outside your vacation home and regularly has kittens. They will probably ask you for details of the situation and if you are willing to do so, with that slip, you will be able to get a free spay and neuter at the local vet. You will need to keep a watch over the cat for at least 24h to 48h after surgery due to wobbly and dizziness from the anesthesia as it'd be dangerous to release it outside in that state, but after that, you can let her out to live her life ! If you need help trapping the cat, tell them so, they are usually willing to send down someone at your house to help, especially if you don't have the equipment there, they'll be willing to land it to you hopefully. As for the kittens, if you are willing to do so, try to find them and keep the mama after surgery until they are old enough, just like in the video, then release her. However, you will probably have to find a home for them yourself unless the organization is willing to take them in. In that case they can either ask you to keep the kittens and mamma and they will take care of finding a foster family or they can ask you to bring everybody to them (which i do not recommend for the cats as they are used to the surroundings if the house and that is where they were born, it is their territory, but I understand some people just don't have the ability to take care of ferals) and they will give you back the mama once the kittens have found a foster home or family. Hope this helps !

  • Ok, anyone doubting the care of Kitten Lady or this feral mama providing good care go to 19:19 and look at how content those babies are.

  • Wait! Don't use a bowl! Cats will get whisker stress. Be sure to use a plate type of bowl.
